View Full Version : Plug a hole?

I ran over a nail or something yesterday that punctured my tire. It's just a strait in hole, no gash or anything. Is there any significant downside to just patching the hole rather than buying a new tire? Is that something that can be easily patched? Is a patch going to hold up to me driving like a jackass? Autocross, sliding, etc? How much should I expect to pay to get it patched?

Patches only cost like $30 if I remember correctly, it can be done fine as long as the hole isn't too close to the sidewall but as for how well it will hold up to auto-x and such I can't really say for sure.

I'm sure a patch would hold up. On my Jetta I actually just used plugs. They always held and you know what I put that thing through.

well.. you talking about patches or plugs?
I have always just plugged my tires myself... on all my cars. the 4runner has a couple plugs now. I have never had a problem. and it only costs like 10 bucks for 5 or 10 of them.
patches are where they take the tire off the rim and put a patch on it. Yeah, its a better solution, but costs more, takes time... I have autocrossed on plugs and never even thought about it, nor had any reason to care.
Of course, both of them need to be basically a nail hole (no cuts or gashes), and if it is in the tread that is closest to a sidewall, or in the sidewall, you'll have to replace the tire, since it'll flex too much.

try auto-x on a tire with too many plugs and you'll end up with a flat tire and a damaged sidewall from running it flat. Not a good idea to auto-x with plugged tires. Patch is the way to go and it will hold up lots better.

I drifted the fuck out of many patched/plugged tires...never had a blow out or even a leak due to any of them.

Burny patched the tire for me and it's holding up fine.
