hey, i got a question.

CJ, TJ, YJ, JK, etc etc etc. what are those letters standing for? vin number? chassis number?

does CJ mean "civilian jeep"?

i know what the different body styles are, i just don't know why they have those acronyms to differentiate them. sorry if this seems like a stupid question :confused:

The model designations of YJ and TJ are used throughout the world in the Jeep enthusiast community to differentiate which model is being spoken of instead of using the more ambiguous term "Wrangler". Wikipedia is your friend...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Wrangler#YJ

i already read that on wikipeida before i made the thread. that doesnt answer my question. If that is what they use to destinguish those models, then WHY do they use THOSE letters... and why does every other model have a 2 letter acronym that represents their body style....

Not sure. Probably just a chassis code. Like my car, I could call it a 1999 Subaru Impreza 2.5rs 2 door coupe, or I could call it GC8 which is the chassis code and means the same thing.

i believe the meanings are:

mj = military jeep
cj = 1st civilian jeep
after that its just chassy code (years) just as cj 1-7, tj, xj, etc....

lj =long jeep (aka mine)

maybe it is a chassis code...I know with my previous car the Tiburon went from RD to GK to FL from 97 till 08...3 gens

Just chassis codes, just like ek, eg, ef, dc2, dc4, etc for hondas

can't forget the best - CJ8.

and yes, they're simply the chassis codes. Makes it easy on the "community" to distinguish body style as well as suspension package.
