If I can get the break in miles on her by then, I might.
Maybe I'll just take the rest of the day off and go drive to Tampa and back. That would do it.

Actually the builder told me the tolerances were so tight, that I could get on it after 20 miles.... just enough to let the rings seat.
But after dumping this much $$$ into the motor, I'm doing the traditional break in.
Drove 20 miles.
Changed oil
Drive another 250 miles and change oil.
Drive another 230 miles put in synthetic and my final tune and I'm set.

Shaggy, don't waste the oil at that low of intervals. Just swap the filter. After all the issues I've seen I won't run synthetic in anything. - Robert's original bottom end was loosing ring seal inside of 30k miles, even some Ford techs said its was the oil. My harley was down almost 30psi of cranking ressure and over 20% on a leak-down, after switching back to regular oil for 300 miles it's back where it should be. - To each their own, but you'll never see me running synthetics in anything.

Well the 20 mile oil change was only for good measure on my part. I'm not keen on letting engine oil lube and whatever else slosh around. So thats why that one was changed so fast.
Right now just traditional 10w30 oil for break in.
But I run Royal Purple 5w20 synthetic normally. Gonna stick with it and say a prayer, lol (your scaring me JP)

I've heard all these great things about synthetics, but I've got a list of shit that's been trashed as a direct result of running them. To each their own.
I understand wanting to change the oil of a fresh motor. There is always debris from the assembly process and the breakin/wear in of the bearings and rings. Like I said though, the oil itself is not polluted unless the filter isn't foing it's job, in which case no amount of changes will help it. - Just swap the filter a couple times(and obviously top it back off) and then switch to whatever oil makes you happy. I'd check with them, but I've been told by oil manufacterers' that you shouldn't run synthetics inside of the first 2-3k miles. - that was Mobile's excuse for 4 trashed camshafts anyway....:rolleyes2:(two cams each in a pair of boat blower motors)
and to get back on topic - I doubt I'll have my heads back in time to be out there, but it would be nice....

break in period = oil temp in the driveway. Once it hits 250 once we're ready to hit the t-brake, stand on it and let 'er rip! If it's gonna come apart, it's gonna come apart, doesn't matter if you're easy on it for a while or not.

Really?
That was what I was curious about.
How long do rings take to seat? first 10 minutes the motor runs?
JP
February 5th, 2009, 05:31 PM
If ring seat hasn't occured by the time the oil hits temp twice, your rings suck. - Dude, the blower motor usually gets fired once at the house, barrel valve set, load it and go. A little pre-warm at the track and check oil temp after I come out of the water box. - T-brake, stand on it, let go and shift a couple.
I've known guys who pin the throttle open the moment they fire a new motor. Peronally I think that's a bit extreme, especially since nothing is up to temp.
Like I said, if it's gonna come apart, it's gonna come apart. No amount of easy miles is going to keep a part failure from occuring if there's an issue.

Lol. Thats about how bad i do. Well not really anymore but i still spin a bit. Im on DRs too though lol. I think what im doing, is doing the burnout when im still in the water box and not completley out, so the tires stay wet. I hooked one time and i had Josh (slow6) ride with me to tell me when i was out for sure. Then i dead hooked, and i let off cause i thought i broke something.
