When going anywhere off pavement, the best idea is to prepare for the unexpected. I try to carry a box filled with tools & a duffle bag filled with gear & supplies. Heres a list of what I carry with me, feel free to add.
Tools
- A basic socket set, with both 1/4" and 3/8" ratchets. Having something with oddball sizes is a must, such as an 18 mm.
- A set of wrenches
- Needle Nose Pliers
- A set of vice grips
- Electrical & duct Tape
- Wire stripper/crimper Tool
- A hammer. If you think you've found a good size one, get a bigger one too.
- Coat hanger.
- Extra wire in a few different sizes
- A few different sized phillps & flathead screw drivers
- A decent sized prybar
- Zip Ties
- Knife
Gear
- First Aid Kit
- A tent. (I carry a 6 person tent, easy to set up. Got at Walmart for $50
- Lighters. More then one.
- A hand powered lattern or flashlight.
- Gas Can.
- Jumper Cables
- Straps (non - recovery)
- WATER!!! (I purchased a 5 gallon foldable water container with built in nossel for less then $10. Everything from washing hands, drinking water to vehicle needs)
Parts
- Full size Spare
- U-Joints. Both front & Rear
- Fluids- at least a quart of EACH!
- Brake Fluid
- Engine Oil
- Coolant
- Transmission
- Differentail
- Power Steering
- Lug Nuts & a few studs
- U-bolts for leaf springs
Recovery
- At least 1 10,000 lbs rated tow strap of a decent length
- D Rings
- Snatch Block

i carry most of the stuff on that last all the time in my rover, minus the u-joints, and some of those fluids.
I also carry:
-super glue
-spare nuts and bolts and screws of various sizes
-torx bits (for us foreign jobs)
-SHOVEL(S)!!! I always have a folding military shovel, but i like to carry more larger ones when i do go offroad
-a 2x4 or blocks of wood are always handy for helping get unstuck or pounding on with a hammer in order to not ruin the metal
-a funnel
-fishing hooks and line....good for a disaster situation (not joking)
-rope of various lengths and thicknesses
-spare clothes
-spare batteries (for flashlights and stuff)
-if you're really out in bufu, a flare gun isn't unreasonable
-mosquito repellant
-snake bite kit (if you don't know what you're doing with snakes)
-CASH...rednecks who can tow you out don't take credit
-one of those mini-cans of WD40
-A/C powered, battery powered, or tank powered Air compressor if you don't have on board air
-tire pressure guage
-i'd upgrade the tow strap to at LEAST 20k lbs and have 30ft in length for your main strap
-if you have the money get a second tow strap of similar size...10k is too small for a 6,000lb suv like mine weighted down with gear and fat people, put it stuck in mud and it will weigh close to the snapping point.
snake sticks, fishing gear, and various nets are optional lol

Thats a great list. I'm very curious, where did you pick up the folding shovel?

they are like $10-$20 at the Army Navy Store. I love mine, mine is teh old style wood handle, but the new ones are all black, all metal and fold smaller. I'm just waiting for my handle to snap off before i replace it with the new style. O btw, if you carry a normal shovel, then carry an ax. otherwise, these folding shovels can double as an axe since the heads are adjustable. US Army surplus ftw
new style
http://www.surplusandadventure.com/images/product/main/0250.jpg they only come in olive drab or black with a hint of rust lol
old style (what i have) only come in olive drab

they aren't huge, and digging isn't exactly easy with them, but its better for those shitty scenarios than just using your hands.

I don't usually carry any spare parts with me. I do carry tools and some fluids though. I also have a bunch of recovery gear. I play in the mud a lot though. I for the most part don''t have to worry about fixing my truck to get it back to the road. I'm usually pretty close to the road to begin with. As for fullsize spare. I just hope I don't get a flat. If I need to do a quick fix to get me back. You can always redneck engineer something out of a ratchet strap and duct tape. lol

I have my GPS for deep backwoods trails, and mark waypoints.
Hilift (or farm jack from Harbor freight) is always good.
I picked up a Midland 40 channel CB off Ebay like 4 years ago. Its been in 4 trucks now and still works great. Need to upgrade from the magnet antenna though.
Oh, forgot as well, one of my first upgrades I ever did - Fire Extinguisher

I don't really take anything. I just recently got a strap and even more recently frayed the shit out of said tow strap.
