View Full Version : SMG vs Manual

Well, in a few months I've decided I'm going to sell the bike, the car, put 8-10k down on what may be an older year E46 M3, 2000-2002 most likely. I've made up my mind that I definitely want another manual car, but one of my buddies said he's driven a BMW with the SMG tranny and said it was the coolest thing he's ever driven. Said when you let out from a stop you can hear the clutch being let out... ? That's just how he explained it.
What are your views on that? Please keep in mind that before I looked into the SMG tranny... I've made up my mind that there was absolutely no way I would drive a normal automatic car.

That's what I thought because I love manual cars... plus the SMG is .2 slower in everything.

smg is a full manual car without the clutch pedal.when you let off from a stop its silent and wont move unless you give it gas just like a manual car.if your on a hill and let off the brakes itll roll back just like a manual car.the transmission has a control on it to turn the speed of the shifts up and down in firmness and speed.in m-mode the smg is just straight up nasty.even on the lowest setting nobody could even dream about shifting as fast as a smg trans can.with smg you have full control its not like that tiptronic bullshit where itll change gears for you.you can downshift and upshift where you want and IMO its alot better and alot more fun than a 6spd m3.

I'm not an SMG fan at all. I'm sure it shifts faster and I can see that it would provide benefits over a true manual, but for the driving experience there's no way I would want one. They seem so different to me and everyone has their own opinion about which is "best", I think the only way to decide for yourself is to drive both and see which one you prefer...
Then, if you decide that you like the auto better, we can go ahead and throw a little coming out party for your homo ass.

As mentioned above, SMG will definitely be faster than you can shift. It just won't be a pleasant ride even if you just want to cruise and take it easy. The shifting is still rough, it revs up, shifts and jerks into the next gear. I took my GF out in my friend's '02 and she could not stand it. As far as what I have read and heard from my bimmer friends, they would take MT over SMG. Although, SMG launch is pretty fuckin dirty...

another thing i think is big is cost to repair. i know doin a reguler clutch on the m3 wont be cheap but i cant imagine how much to repair the smg

i talked to mario about that and hes a bmw tech.he said really the only thing that ever goes wrong is the pump and its not much more than a normal clutch would be.he said there basically the same trans though

theres a rectangular button right behind the shifter press it to the left a couple times and it smooths everything out.im sure your talking about the silver/vert m3 that always flys through the naples meet.if so im sure hes rolling around with it set all the way firm

Well most people here know I'm a big fan of DSG, SMG, etc. However I only really prefer them in racing situations. They are by far superior. For day to day driving you can't beat the feel of a clutch pedal under your foot and shifter in hand.

SMGII sucks. Don't bother with it. 3rd pedal is way more fun anyway. Only car worth getting SMG on is the E60 M5.

Hey hey hey, I definitely prefer manual over all triptronic type trannys, but have never driven an smg by myself to see. I would probably go with manual just to make sure i wouldn't regret getting the smg. However, this is still months in advance because I need to move into a new place before I can start thinking about a fairly large monthly payment on my bussing/hosting income.

SMG is badass as fuck. I would take 6 spd over it tho if its gonna be a daily driver. If I had 2 cars then I would have one of each. And I believe smg is a little pricey when it comes time for repairs.

This would be pretty much exactly what I'd be looking for when it comes time to buy something.

It was on a different M3, an '02. The convertible one that comes to the meet is an '05.
