What is the brightest I could go for headlight bulbs without having a problem with the law? Lookin to put it on g/f's camry so the car doesnt attact much attention but I still want them to be legal. Thanks

Probably 8k, which is blueish-white. Once you start going 10k+ you're looking at pinks and purples and you're guaranteed a pullover.
I have 2 8k ballasts you can buy, but no bulbs. You're welcome to test them on someone else's ride to see if they work.
EDIT: But I think that the law states you have to have projection headlights in order to have HID bulbs... but obviously people don't bother with that.

i've got 8k bulbs in the foglights on my rover. no issues. to be honest i'd recommend rocking something a little more stock color.

It's not so much about brightness as it is color or cutoff. A 12k HID in a non HID houseing is going to put out less visible light than a stock bulb, and yet it will get you pulled over more because of the color and the scatter of the light.

so an hid in the stock headlight assembly is actually going to make it worse? Why do people do it then?
and if i do it i was thinking like 8k. Will that help with visibility and keep the stockish color

Yeah, it definitely helps with visibility. Problem is, it floods the headlight, appearing as brights to fellow motorists... which is the reason it's illegal. But so many people do it, that cops would rather pull over people not using their turn signals than deal with non-projection lens issues.

8k are technically the brightest you can buy.they are also the most normal color any more blue is illegal and any less turns yellow which is also illegal

STi's come with 5400 stock and they are about pure white and very bright. If I did a conversion on the RS I would probably stay around there.

The different colors will obviously attract more attention. But in any car that did not come with HID's from the factory, they are technically illegal.
Its going to be a combination of the color and also the scatter. If you are blinding oncoming traffic, or the people in front of you and it looks like you have your brights on, then you are going to have a problem sooner or later.

I had 10K in my headlights.
12K in my fogs.
I used to get people flashing me all the time, thinking my highs were on.
So simple solution, angled my headlights down to the ground some.
Problem solved, no more flashing.
Need to get a new kit thou, all 4 ballasts and relays went bad.....

I found this:
http://www.mcculloch-hid.com/ebay/Xentec/HIDcolortemps.jpg
So is the numbering just the color of the light? Or is it the actual brightness? This makes me want some 5000-6000k's.
*Edit: Just read the S2000 HIDs are 4300k stock and those are headlights are amazing. I'd definitely go for the 5000k bulbs personally. I don't need any extra attention.
