So I just got my motorcycle endorsement, and I've been looking for a bike. The instructor from my class is helping me out with it. Looking for a cheap bike, with low miles on it. He's buying it, and then selling it to me and letting me make payments.

He said he found a sv650, and I was just wondering what everyone's opinion was on them.

Yeah, SV650's are real nice, and look bad ass with the side fairings. Best thing is that you can find them cheap as hell since they're not as mainstream as the GSXR.

Yea I learned that on c/l. I'm finding a bunch of 05 gsxr's for like 6k or so. And I believe Chancy talked the dude to 2 1/2-3k for a 05 sv650.

Yeah, sv650's are good starter bikes. They are over 600cc's obviously, but they are pretty forgiving where a 600 CBR or GSXR wont be. And they do look pretty decent with the fairings you can add.

POSmiata

Yea, they do like good with the fairings. Idk if they one I'm getting has them or not.

Rossim22

The fairings aren't very expensive. You should be able to ebay them for about $300, just be careful and read the reviews because some chinese fairings don't fit very well.

Ahh, thats for the heads up.
Oh, and nice 636. I saw it on c/l the past few weeks. Wishing I had the cash to buy it.

Lol, unless you'd be willing to work out some sort of payment plan. Otherwise, I'll have to stick to the sv650.

Haha, no it's alright. I just buy motorcycles for cheap from people that have to sell them quickly or priced too low, then sell them for what they're worth. I bought the ninja for $3900 and i'm selling it for around 5 grand. :rock

I was strongly considering the SV650 when I was getting my first bike. I rode a few and they were great. Felt very manageable, great tq and quite nimble.
To be honest I really like the "naked" or "streetfighter" look so I say go for the
SV650N and then go from there!
BTW, check out www.svrider.com

Here's a link to a few nice SV650N and SV650S...

But as I was saying in the "pics- lets see um" thread. Once I get my bike, anyone want to set up a FMR cruise?

Why in the world would you get a crossbreed?

When I look at a SV650, it just doesn't seem like a sport bike. More like a touring bike along with some cosmetic and apparel accents of a sport bike even though its in the same class.

Eh, I'd still consider it a sports bike. But I'm just looking for something that's a good starter bike. And I've heard a bunch of good things about the sv60.

It's called a "standard" (naked) bike. It's a true street bike. It will have a more upright riding position than a sport bike, thus making it more comfortable to ride...without sacrificing too much sporting performance in the handling department. BTW, the SV650S is a rare exception of a bike sans fairings with the sport riding position. The SV650N is the "naked" version with the more upright seating position...

-_-

I would still get a ZX6R if I were you.... I'm trying to find the right CBR600

SV650's are still sport bikes, just with a street-comfortable tune. More low-mid range power over the mainstream sport bikes. The best part about it is the price. Can't argue with a 2 yr old bike with 5k miles for around 3 grand.

POSmiata

the sv650 is the cheapest bike Chancy was able to find with low miles. Along with being a new bike. And atm I'm not gonna be to picky, I cant afford to just go buy a bike cash in hand. He's buying the bike, and allowing me to make payments.

So there is a difference better the sv650s/n with the way your sitting?

The footpegs look a little higher and farther back on the sv650s.

Ahh, and from looking at the pics looks like that handle bars are at a different angle to.

YoungBlood
September 9th, 2009, 07:00 PM
they are, thats why the riding position is different. on the 650s, the handlebars are angled down, because your supposed to ride it with the leaned over riding poistion, like most other sport bikes, the 650N is less of a "sport bike" which is why the handlebars are flat and the pegs are located differently. its more of an upright position.

My old SV is for sell at Sunsports now for like 2500-3000. It was an 05. It has about 5000 miles on it, and it's got some work done to it.

Had to put the bike on hold for awhile. Mom and dad flipped because i didnt have a car to use when the weather was bad. So I'm going to get this beat up protege tomorrow. THEN saving up for the bike.

Heya POS. Couple things to consider. First off, buy a used one for cheap. Don't get hung up on it having minor defects. Your first bike you will most likely drop a few times.

Having a car as a back up transportation is the way to go. I used my Bandit 600S as my daily ride in Orlando. I use 36 miles one way to work. Saved me a ton in gas, but really sucked when the Florida rains hit you. Nothing is worst than heading into work, or to a date and having to sit on the side of the road getting drenched.

The difference between the SV650 and the SV650S, aside from the cosmetics and wind protection of fairings, the "fairing" bike has clip-ons to replace the standard bike's tubular handlebar (Which are adjustable like most sport bikes) and more rearset footpegs, the unfaired SV has a slightly longer swingarm and wheelbase, footpegs that are lower and further forward, one-tooth-shorter final gearing and a hair more trail thanks to triple clamps with 1.5mm less offset.

The only real consideration to put into it is, which feels more comfortable. I bought my Bandit S because the fairing and wind shield offers great wind protection, which is something to take into consideration; however, the SV650 and the SV650s have different seating positions which should also be considered. Don't buy a bike just because it looks cool. All bikes look cool (Well maybe not most of Buell). Buy something that is comfortable, and meets your needs.

I use to do trips from here to Orlando, once or twice a month while I was going to school up there. On those long trips the seat position made the ride an absolute joy, and nothing beats a road trip by motorcycle.

A few more thing: If the bike bug bites you hard, remember that there is a Class of motorcycle racing for SV's. Kinda like Spec Miata.

The frame is one of the best setups in the world. The engine is really responsive, and the suspension and chassis offers quick response to turns.

I plan on buying one in the next few months my self. Not sure if I want the 650 or the 1000 (Had a friend with the 1000 w/ silver on silver paint).

Happy hunting, and if i get mine before you I'll PM you for a test drive.
