me and a couple of friends were looking at building a chump car, but i think they lost interest. if you need help or a driver let me know. i know in chump car you need 4 drivers, but i dont know much about lemons

I'd like to do this, but I have no extra cash to spend on it.

Isn't there like a $500 budget to build the car? For parts to actually make it run/faster. And another limit for how much you can spend on brakes/rollbar/safety etc etc.
Billy, sell me the teg. for 100 bucks. kick everyones ass. And then I'll sell it back for $200. lol

So say, I had a gutted teg. And managed to get a hold of a bunch of parts cheap/free and made it legit. I would get protested? And how would you lose your car?

you would be ok. the thing is you have to keep records of all of your transaction.
google it for all the rules. there is too much to explain.

if i'm not mistaken there's no limit for all the safety parts. it's all the go fast goodies that they give you the spending cap.

^^ Correct. Safety equipment is limitless, and at this point, thats the only thing holding our team back from building a car.

I'd say build an n-body car. there is a lot of leeway in the rules for safety parts.... brakes and suspension can be argued....corvette brakes will fit n-body cars. they are pretty light, the ecotec motor's are pretty reliable, have getreg transmissions and i bet you could boost one for under $500. and if you source the right car there is a "fe2" option that fits it with stiffer springs, dampers, sway bars...

Its an endurance race of half-ass built cars on a tight budget. Atleast from what I understand. Sounds like it could be fun/challenging.

I'd be interested in helping put together a lemons team and contributing some $$ toward it provided it's a serious attempt.
So if someone out there is serious about lemons, let me know.

24 hours which is why it's called the 24 hours of lemons. it's done in 3 8 hour segments i think. and the purpose is basically let's see if i can drive this piece of shit i found at the junk yard long enough to cross the finish line. so in other words in like a red neck's 24 hours of Le Mans

the main difference in the rules that i like is. in lemons if another team wants to buy your car you HAVE to sell it to them at a predetermined price set by lemons. in chump car that rule does not exist. also if chump car does think you bent the rules a little too much cost wise, they can impound your car and auction it off later. so as long as you are in true spirit of chump car rules you have nothing to worry about.

where as in lemons you'd have to sell your car if money is offered or in that people's curse thing or whatever right?

my friend was telling me about it but he called it something different i think. i just remember seeing a video link with that in the title so i thought that's what it was called.
don't they pick out a vehicle and basically destroy it or something? my friend that told me about lemons originally said they do something like that and there was this one mercedes that they took off the oil cap and let all the drivers pour something in but the car still ran so he finished the race. i could be way off on this but that's why i was asking.

March 23rd, 2010, 02:59 PM
yea they pick one car before the race and destroy it. i dont know how strict they are on that tho.
ill be doing it. in a 240. more to come....

thats why i would rather do chump car. yeah its cheap to build one but you put a lot of time into it, and to see it get destroyed off the race track, or bought by another team would piss me off.

I'd understand the whole, wreck someone's car if they got caught red handed cheating big time.
But the whole selling your car to another team, just because they want it is bullshit.

I just got done looking at chump car rules. It's basically the same as LeMons. The idea you can buy a car out comes from claiming horse racing. It keeps the field level.
Like I said, I'd contribute to a car if we can put a team together. In talking to my friends in Texas who race in Lemons there, you really need a good pit crew. Additional costs besides the car can run a couple thousand more for set up, tires etc.
We'd need a car, a trailer, drivers, a place to work on it, a budget, and a few hours of labor to get it ready.
Most of all, we'd need commitment from people, follow through and beer.

and how strict can they be about taking your car? youd be out of the race anyways. id be like ummm...no. you cant have it.

i may be in the poor boat soon myself. my job has been cutting hours and business is bad. they may be closing the doors soon. i am not sure. i want to do this so bad. so i will be in a holding pattern for the time being.
but if things change i would be the first on board with this project. i have been wanting to do this for about a year and a half.

Hey guys!! I'm Travis and I'm happy to find this forum. I saw this thread about LeMons and ChumpCar and wanted to join and participate in the discussion.
I am the Regional Coordinator for the ChumpCar World Series here in Florida and Georgia. Basically I help answer any questions any of you local folks may have and take my car to any local car shows, trade shows, etc for a little CCWS marketing.
I have a two car ChumpCar team here in Tampa. The car I have ran in a few Lemons and CCWS races is a 1993 Ford Escort GT. She isn't the fastest but she keeps on ticking... Four races, four finishes. Highest has been a 4th last month at Rockingham, NC. The second car isn't finished yet but we are going to debut it in May at Homestead for the CCWS race there. It's a 1995 Ford Mustang. For info on my team visit www.tajracing.com (http://www.tajracing.com) For more info on the CCWS visit www.chumpcar.com (http://www.chumpcar.com)

Thanks

But light weight mod is my best contribution lol

There are a few ways a team can form... either one guy buying the car, prepping it, being the team captain, then renting the seats out at the races (arrive and drives) or a group of people kicking in what they can afford and each have equal say, building the car together, then racing it. I've seen both ways work, but I've seen the group effort fail many times. Lots of internal head butting within the team.
Having one team owner / captain takes away all of that. It's easier if you have the financial resources to do so and sponsors since it does get a little pricey.

You buy the car, then the safety would be a group effort.
