View Full Version : Throttling Bandwidth...
Keith
July 9th, 2010, 06:43 PM
I know this forum has turned into our tech questions.
Anyone familiar with throttling bandwidth. I am just trying to keep my roomy at a normal level so i can be a bandwidth hog. I just upgraded to business class through comcast because a deal at work.
This would be through my mac. I am using an airport extreme, but i would assume if there is a program i can use it should work on my mac.
Thanks...

What speed did you get through the business class?
Keith
July 9th, 2010, 10:25 PM
16 or 18 mbps download, and 2 upload or some shit. I know its pretty much night and day on speed...

Its 16down/2up, there aren't as many restriction's on the business class and I know as far as bandwith goes on residential there is a 250 gig cap. I honestly don't know if they have one set for the business customer's. Hopefully they gave you a brand new modem for it to otherwise you will be getting a phone call to have another one put in.

What router do you have?
You will basically want to enable QoS and either setup IP/MAC priority and throttle his IP/MAC to a limited amount of bandwidth. You might also have to give yourself priority. It really all depends on the router make/model/firmware.
I do this at home ... upload I really don't care much about. She doesn't torrent, and I have hers set to a limited enough speed. Plus it's one click to change the settings.

They use SMC for their business modems, and they are far better than the shit they give to consumers. They will be rolling out DOCSIS 3.0 in the next few months locally. I will be getting 50/10 on two connections going to my office. Should be fun.

Yea I know about the smc's...I work there. They are already doing docsis 3 modem swap out's, which means the 50 meg will be available to business's first. Then residential once everything thing else is upgraded, hopefully by the end of this year.

Nice which office do you work at? I need to swap my home modem (faulty ethernet port when I bump into it, little wiggle and it's good) .... they handing out DOCSIS 3.0 for home modems yet? Want to be prepared. As soon as my rep calls me telling my the 50/10 is available we will be upgrading.

Not front office, more like Dispatch. Docsis 3 modems are slowly supposed to be making the way out over the next 6 months, hopefully docsis 3 speeds by the beginning of next year but who knows cause it was supposed to happen March of this year. I know you can buy Docsis 3 modems at Best Buy, Linksys and Motorola carries them.

okay third try. Should i get a new modem from comcast sir?
If you want a docsis 3 modem from comcast you will have to wait until we have them back in stock again, shortage right now due to the high demand. If you have internet now it should be a docsis 2, which won't cause any issues. Once the docsis 3 modems are back in which maybe at least a month then you can get one of those. As long as your modem isn't dropping out or reseting alot then you do not need a new one.
Edit: It should say on the sticker what docsis type it is, if it is and SB5101 or 5102 it is a good modem. I can always look it up at work and see.
Keith
July 13th, 2010, 10:19 PM
how do i know if i am on docsis 2?
Nate
July 13th, 2010, 10:22 PM
There should be a sticker on the back or bottom that says it is, or you can google the model number and it will say if it is docsis 2. Like I said or I can pull your modem when I am in the office tomorrow.

Fyi, speedtest.comcast.net is more accurate since it actually pings off the local servers out of fort myers. And even if you work for comcast you can still get hate mail. I got a friendly phone call the other day that my account exceeded 250gb on downloads last month.

We are moving to a Gnax collocation in Atlanta with a gig link. The Vancouver is our central corporate collocation (100mb port). The others we use for voip (sip trunking with Level 3) and Oracle redundancy.

Is GNAX still @ 56 Marietta? ...now known as the TelX. I used to work @ 56, my boss started the Atlanta IX, and sold it to TelX when they purchased 56. Now known as TIE (TelX Internet Exchange)
We peer with TIE in ATL. I just recently shutdown my colo in 56, from Miami (peer1) to ATL (GreatAccess) was less than 15ms and 5-7 hops.
56 is one of the best building to be in around atlanta. They run a tight ship. If thats where you're going, facilities wise you'll be happy. I haven't heard too much about GNAX, can't speak about them.

I am in collocating 56 Marietta currently with a different company, but GNAX moved to its own building entirely and I just have a few dedicated servers from them currently for testing. We are planning on moving, but still testing.
