View Full Version : Laptop Sound Isn't Working.

I've tried all the basic trouble shooting stuff. I've had no sound since last night. Volume is turned up, everything looks correct. The only thing that bothers me is that I had to run Norton and take care of a virus this morning. Is it possible that could've done some shit? I have no sound whatsoever. That includes the basic computer beeps as well.

Also, does anyone have safe sites to download spybot and adware?

Prob a driver issue. Titter should see this and know just what to do.

It is possible Norton deleted something, not a big fan of their consumer stuff. I would run a scan with Malwarebytes, and McAfee Stinger which is a standalone scanner (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/).
To fix the issue, check out device manager. Start -> Run -> devmgmt.msc ... make sure you see now yellow explanation points, or question marks. Check out the sound section, and make sure it lists your sound card.
What model/make is your laptop? Try the manufacturers website, and download the latest sound driver.

I downloaded the latest driver and as the computer shut down to restart, I got the classic "windows shut down" noise. Then when it restarted, I don't have noise again. Any suggestions?

So it worked for a few seconds, then went away? Did you check device manager? Windows XP? Vista? 7?

device manager> uninstall driver> right click> scan for hardware changes, see what happens.

I hope that's sarcasm...
I'm reformatting it after work today. It needs to be done anyway I guess. There's a ton of shit on there I don't need, and I would like to have it for internet, itunes and photo editing and that's about it.

I did. Found one virus and took care of it, however I still have a ton of malware and whatever it is, also is stopping my sound from working on the laptop. I really think reformatting is the best answer right now.

Are you still getting malware popups? Like fake alerts that you are infected with xxxxxx.xxx?
It will just be easier for you to reformat if that's the case. It sounds fixable, but it also good be a rootkit which is a little bit more of a pain to remove. If you format, do not do a quick format, let it take its time.

Yes to the first question. Also combofix said it found a rootkit and fixed it, but I don't think it did. Like I said, I want the laptop to have internet, itunes, and my photo editing software and that's it. It was dog piss slow the last couple of months anyway. (Probably from having 600 billion 3mb photos on it) So this will be good to start fresh.

Congrats Jeff...You're the 1 millionth person to say that!!! You win $100,000 courtesy of jackasses-r-us.com!!!!!
The best part is that viruses/malware/spyware can come from any site. People assume porn because it's taboo. I have a feeling this was a facebook virus.

Oh, I still want a mac...I just don't have the cash to drop at the moment. Saving for a plane ticket and a few other things.

I did. Combofix didn't fix it. Found that there was a rootkit but didn't fix it. Hitman V3.5 found nothing, and same goes for housecall...FUCK. LOL

mac is a fad man, people buy them for all the wrong reasons, and think they are better because they don't get viruses, and your paying for the name, it's not like they use any special hardware. The majority of users are windows users, not mac, which is why windows is a target for viruses. It would be the same shit if it was the other way around.

Qouted for truth.
But the way i see it, is that if anything ever happens to my mac/iphone/ipad/ or any other product i can walk into any apple store and know i can get it fixed. I dont have to call asia and get some terrible customer service. Mac is a trend, but if you use the computer the OS is intuitive (arguable) and overall good machine. The hardware is the same but its all about how its optimized

Sure till its out of warranty, and then get ready to pay an assload to get it fixed. Thats the good thing about non-apple products, they're easy as shit to order parts for, and there are lots of places to get PC's fixed, best buy, staples, officemax, all the small computer shops, anywhere. All apple has is the apple store.

Ya cuz all those places are going to be cheap to get something fixed. None warranty coverage is always expensive even on a 200$ PC. I remember working at best buy and compusa some motherboards for replacements on 200 dollar machines cost 600 bucks to get fixed. Plus apple has a 24-48 turn around time in most cases for a repair and best buy has a 2 week turn around time if your lucky....good luck with that im done tho, the debate happens all the time no one cares.
.I like PC's my man. i dont know why this has turned debate..Its always going to go on. Its like chevy vs ford, mitsus vs. subarus.
Who the fuck cares?

Why? cus I'm tired of people buying apple thinking its greater than gods shit, I honestly don't give a shit what you got, cus you obviously know your stuff, but for everyone else who doesn't.....don't think apple is gonna solve your problems.
