View Full Version : what spring to get for my car

alright so the springs I had ordered were on back order for way too long so I called the company and told them to cancel my order.
Now I'm trying ot figure out which springs I should get instead of just buying a set.
Car 91 MR2
what brand of spings should I look at. I'm looking at H&R, Eibach, and Tein.
It seems that the H&Rs are a more race geared kind of spring, but I'm not too sure on this. Granted I will need to get some nice quality shocks for the car but for now I need to get the springs.
I'm working to get better track performance out of my car so I don't want more than a 2inch drop at max and don't want them too stiff so that I can maintain good performance for track driving. I can't seem to find any info on the stiffness of any of the springs I'm looking at but the H&Rs do emphasize track driving for their sport series which they make for my car, they don't seem to make the race ones for mine, at least not that I can find so far, I'd rather have ones that are geared to high track performance.
let me know if there is anything else I should be looking at.

well from what i know about car suspensions with those companies. I know kyle has Tein and loves it, the rx8 is stiff lol I know the guys just wanting a street lowering job goes with eibach (mustang guys), and the track mustang guys go with the H&R. (the true stangers roll with the steeda shit lol)

I looked and dang your year gets the shaft on options... if you want to only get springs now i would get the Eibach pro-kit model #8215.140 i would contact Eibach for spring rates to make sure its what you need. The sportline version will drop the car too low limiting the stroke of the damper resulting in rough handling. Ive had Teins and they run very soft rates.. if you want to just cruise get your s-techs... want to turn get the pro kit. dampers will be very importnt though... dont think the springs will be super hero without good dampers... try the koni inserts (pain in the ass but WELL worth it if your serious about getting some track time)
hope i helped

i seem to be leaning toward the H&Rs but yeah i will most definately be getting some good shocks with dampeners.
what are these koni inserts you are talking about, not familiar with them.

If you are getting good struts/shocks id wait. Then you can choose a spring rate that corresponds with the suspension.
Koni yellows+eibach race springs. solid

Koni inserts... koni decided that there wasnt enough profit in creating there own stampings of your dampers... so you have to get the tops and bottoms cut off and tig welded on to the Koni piece. BUT... once thats done which any reputable suspension shop will do you can get them revalved for racing and/or rebuilt when they wear out. I would contact Ground Control and see if they have a coilover conversion kit or height adjustment pearch for you (none were listed) They are the premiere "piece meal" company in my opinion. You can get custom spring rates that match what you want to do, how you drive, and how your care inherently behaves (mid engine layout)

Id run off the shelf Koni yellows. And Eibach Race springs, as long as the spring you want dont have a super high rate.

i went to koni's site and there were no OTS setups... only inserts. GC uses only eibach springs... OTS and inserts good for about 500lb springs

wow, that sounds outrageously expensive! I might end up doing that though. I think for now I'm just going to go with the H&R springs and try to find some decent shocks till I get better at driving on a track till I go that insane with my suspension.
Yeah people don't like to make good suspensions for midengines, mostly because there aren't that many of them out there. The MR2 has been to my knowledge the best selling mid on the market to date. The newer one flopped though due to crappy looks and shotty design. They need to bring back a similar setup as the 91-97 models with just updated looks. the trunk is great, the general feal is awesome and it's just an all around functionable car. I'd love to see one similar to mine with a hardtop convertable. I'd sell mine and my truck just to get it.
I think I'll be ordering the stuff probably in like 3 weeks, need to recover after what I'll be spending here in march for some new tools. plus the air compressor I just got.

no offense man, I'm prety sure you were just being sarcastic and all but damn, lol.
I've seen it done so many times and it never turns out good for the car, people just don't understand how to properly cut spings. you really should only shave them. Use a grinder and a lot of water to take some metal off. water to cool ever few seconds so you don't screw up the temper on the springs. Even still that's dangers as unless you do it just right you could screw the temper and be fudged big time in a corner.

That what i was hoping everyone would think. I would never ever put cut springs on one of my car. Unless i had a junk car that i wanted to have a little fun with. I also heard a way to do it is to clamp the height you want and put them in the oven.. and takers??

Hahaha thats just what some one told me. That was back when i owned a honda and i was buying suspension some kid advised me to do that. The ending result was me buying Tockio illuminas with skunk2 coil sleeves.

if you are thinking about getting shocks and lower springs. i would get a coil over ex.
Kontrol Pro Damper System
Ksport Kontrol Pro Fully Adjustable Coilover Kits provide the ultimate in suspension technology for your street or track car. 36 levels of dampening adjustment allow you to fine tune the ride to your handling and comfort needs. The dampening adjusts compression and rebound simultaneously for ease of adjustment. Pillow ball top mounts in the front and rear on some applications allow you to maintain vehicle manufacturer suspension geometry design. The pillow ball top mounts also allow you a more direct feel for solid driver response. Camber adjustability is included on pillow ball top mounts that allow it for the ability to adjust camber from the actual coilover, instead of a separate camber kit.
how much you want to spend?

well for right now I'm guessing total costs shouldn't be more than roughly 450-500 for the srpings and shocks. For right now I just want to improve the current suspension so that I wont be all over the place but still have a nice street ride.
I need to learn how to control the car in mild setup first then progress to a more agressive suspension as I progress. When I get ready to get a better system I'll also be upgrading my wheels to a stagered set that will have 245-255 in the rear and 235 in the front. I need to wait a while for that though as the set of rims I want will cost me around 1800 just for the rims.

what kind of shocks and springs can you get for $450-$500? how about camber kit? i know you're trying to save as much you can. i have agx and eibach springs they cust me over $550 2 years ago. i spent $200 for ingalls camber last month
you can find Ksport Kontrol Pro for $850 or less.

well I can get the H&R springs for around 200-240 so I'm betting I'll have to pay about 100 a shock or so. So I should be around 650 when done. for now I'll just go with some good quality shocks maybe without dampers and just work with those for a while till I improve my skills to were I need the dampers

as for the camber my car is pretty adjustable as it is, with the light drop that I will get with the springs I'm looking at I shouldn't need to worry too much about a kit for that just yet.
